Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the dynamic behaviour of a three-fluid heat exchanger subjected to a step change in the temperature and velocity of the fluids at the inlet.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis is carried out using the finite element methodology, adopting the Galerkin’s approach, using implicit method for transient behaviour.

Findings

The effect of step changes in the inlet temperature of hot and cold fluids show that an increase in the fluid inlet temperatures leads to increased outlet temperatures of all fluids and decreased hot fluid effectiveness. The exit temperatures of the fluids do not show any response initially for a certain period of time with the step changes. The time to reach steady state is independent of the step change in inlet temperature of the hot and the cold fluids.

Research limitations/implications

The findings of this paper is limited to constant property situations.

Practical implications

The findings will be useful in designing control and regulation systems of heat exchangers used in different industrial processes and operations, such as in nuclear reactors, cryogenic and petrochemical process plants.

Social implications

The analysis provides a time frame in which the controls and regulation systems work, so that the necessary safety precautions for the people working in the surrounding area can be taken care of.

Originality/value

As per the best knowledge of the authors, none of the papers so far have discussed the effect of the change in the inlet temperature and velocity of both the fluids. Performance parameters such as effectiveness, time to reach steady state, etc. have not been studied so far.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to facilitate the medical tourists visiting emerging countries for various kinds of ailments by ranking the possible destinations to avail medical treatments.

Design/methodology/approach

A Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchical Process (FAHP) with a mixed-method approach is applied to analyze data collected from patients and substantiate it with medical tour operators in India to gain managerial insights on the choice-making patterns of the patients.

Findings

India is a preferred emerging market location due to the low cost and high medical staff quality. India offers value for money, whereas Singapore and Thailand are preferred destinations for quality and technology.

Research limitations/implications

The study will facilitate the emerging markets' governments, hospitals and medical tourists to understand the importance of various determinants responsible for availing medical treatment outside their country.

Practical implications

The study recommends that cost and quality care are the patients' prime focus; government policies must provide clear guidelines on what the hospitals and country environment can offer and accordingly align the marketing strategies.

Originality/value

This study is the first attempt to rank various factors affecting medical tourism using the FAHP approach.

Abstract

Purpose

Alexa’s integration in rural primary schools has improved the pedagogy and has created an engaging and objective learning environment. This study investigates the integration, with a specific focus on exploring its various aspects. The impact of Alexa’s on students' English vocabulary, comprehension and public speaking are examined. This study aims to provide insights the teachers and highlight the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in rural education.

Design/methodology/approach

This content analysis study explores the use of Alexa in primary education in rural areas of India. The study focuses on the types of the questions asked by the students and examines the pedagogical implications of these interactions. By analyzing the use of Alexa in rural educational settings, this study aims to contribute to our understanding of how voice assistants are utilized as educational tools in underprivileged areas.

Findings

Alexa significantly improved students' English vocabulary, comprehension and public speaking confidence. Alexa increased school enrollment and retention. Virtual voice assistants like Alexa may improve pedagogy and help India’s rural education. This study shows AI improves rural education.

Research limitations/implications

The study only covers rural India. Self-reported data and observations may bias the study. The small sample size may underrepresent rural educational institutions in India.

Originality/value

Alexa is used to study rural India’s primary education. Voice assistants in rural education are understudied. The study examines Alexa’s classroom use, student questions, and policy and teacher education implications. AI’s education transformation potential addresses UNESCO’s teacher shortage. This novel study examines how AI can improve rural education outcomes and access.
